What is Liposuction?

Liposuction (or lipo) is a classic surgical technique that helps people contour their bodies for a more athletic, lean appearance. Your doctor can apply this fat-removal procedure anywhere on the body where there is undesirable fat. Liposuction can eliminate undesirable fat from your waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, knees, upper arms, cheeks, chin, or neck. Perhaps one of the most commonly targeted spots for liposuction in our male patients is the waist region – also known as a man’s “love handles.”

Liposuction currently remains the single most popular aesthetic surgery procedure in America. Typically, your surgeon will use liposuction to remove unwanted fat from areas that weren’t responsive to diet, weight lifting, and exercise routines. Getting liposuction offers men the opportunity to slim areas of the body while ensuring that these areas will not accumulate fat deposits at times in the future. Listed as the go-to surgeon for men by Forbes, Dr. Steinbrech is a certified surgeon who specializes in male liposuction in Chicago – all using state-of-the-art methods.

How is Liposuction Performed?

The procedure for male patients starts with an injection of a saline, anesthetic, and adrenaline combination. This mixture will reduce bruising and bleeding while also making fat more collectible. In medical terms, this is known as either the “super-wet” or the “tumescent” technique, based on the fluid to the targeted fatty tissue ratio. After the solution has been put into the area, Dr. Steinbrech will use one of two specialized methods of liposuction. These two methods are called suction-assisted lipectomy (called SAL) or ultrasonic-assisted lipectomy (known as UAL). With both methods, a tiny incision gets made in a discreet part of the body.

SAL Lipo

In the case of SAL, a cannula (small tube) is inserted and moved back and forth beneath the skin. This will break up the fat layer and help suction it out easily.

UAL Lipo

With UAL, ultrasonic energy gets used to liquefy fat. This liquefaction is a way to break down the fat more smoothly before it is suctioned out with a cannula. This is a more tech-based approach. Based on how much excess fat is being taken out, liposuction could last anywhere from 1-5 hours in Dr. Steinbrech’s Chicago clinic.

Liposuction Recovery Time

Once your surgery is complete, Dr. Steinbrech may use drainage tubes, compression garments and prescription antibiotics to facilitate your healing process. Male patients who had liposuction around the abdomen or thighs are encouraged to walk and move as soon as they’re able. Many liposuction patients will be able to return to work after a few days. More intense activities should be avoided for a month.

Transferring Fat with BodyBanking®

Partial results of liposuction are visible immediately. In most cases, improvement will continue as your swelling subsides for the first three months after their surgery. It’s important to note that will liposuction has a particularly great success rate, fat can return. One of the biggests myths surgeons tell patients is that liposuction results are permanent. Without proper diet and exercise, fat can return. However, when you add BodyBanking® to your liposuction treatment, you also have an opportunity to transfer that fat to more desirable areas (biceps, shoulders, etc.). Most male liposuction clients love their new look. (Please click the gallery to look at Dr. Steinbrech’s work on male liposuction patients throughout the Chicago area.)
