What Is Gynecomastia?

It can be:

  • Excess chest fatty tissue
  • Excess glandular development around the breast and nipple area
  • A combination of both extra fat and glandular tissue

You can have this condition in one or both breasts. Before you go to gynecomastia surgery, you should be checked to see if there is any specific medical cause of their gynecomastia. The causes of gynecomastia can include the use of certain drugs, disease, hereditary conditions, or hormonal changes.

The Gynecomastia Surgical Procedure: What to Know

Gynecomastia surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia or under

local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Multiple methods can be used, depending on the severity of the male patient’s condition.

What should patients expect from gynecomastia treatment?

Gynecomastia surgery can be done via liposuction and/or by surgically removing excess glandular tissue. The time to treat gynecomastia is on approximately two hours.

Recovery from Gynecomastia Surgery

The recovery path from surgery will depend on the type of procedure that was performed. Regardless, downtime is minimal (roughly one week at most) and the results are permanent – unless future weight gain causes excess fat deposits in the breast area. Bruising and swelling is normal following almost any type of surgery; this is no different with gynecomastia. Post-procedure, men will be instructed to wear a chest compression garment for a while until they fully recover. The garment will help skin adhere to your tissue, contour your body, and minimize swelling. In all cases, medication will be prescribed to relieve pain and discomfort you

might experience during the first couple of days after your male breast reduction surgery. During recovery, all strenuous activity should be avoided until your muscles recover and the incisions heal. After surgery, Dr. Steinbrech will carefully evaluate your personal situation and advise you of the time it would take to return to work and normal activities.
