What is a facelift?
A facelift, also known as a Rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that improves signs of visible aging found in the face and neck. This can help change the appearance of sagging skin, fold lines in the face, excess or lack of fat, jowls in the face or jaw or tightening loose skin in the neck. If you’re looking to obtain a more youthful appearance, a facelift can be a great fix. Setting up a consultation with a plastic surgery specialist will give you the details and necessary information you need to make your decision. When deciding on whether a facelift is for you, it is necessary to select a board-certified plastic surgeon for the assurance that you are in the most capable hands. Dr. Steinbrech has specifically tailored his work for male patients to achieve the best results possible.
How is a Facelift Performed?
Patients can choose between having IV sedation or general anesthesia when undergoing the procedure. The facelift procedure by itself can take about two hours. The surgery varies depending on your facial structure, your surgeon and your desired results. The three most common incision techniques are:
The traditional facelift has been around for decades and is used to reposition the skin and muscles on the face and neck. The “full” facelift is best for rejuvenating the face, jowls and neck and can include fat sculpting, lifting and repositioning of muscle and deeper tissues, skin trimming and re-draping. The incision begins at the temples and travels down to the front of the ear, around the earlobe, and behind the ear to the lower scalp at the hairline. Sometimes, another incision is made under the chin.
The limited-incision facelift is a better fit for those who are looking for minor adjustments to the face and can be done without large incisions or anesthesia. This facelift is best for limited rejuvenation around the eyes and mouth, including nasolabial folds and other deep creases. Small incisions are made at the temples and around the ears. In certain cases, incisions are made in the lower eyelids and/or under the upper lip as well. This facelift also incorporates the use of fillers and injections to contour the face and eliminate wrinkles.
A neck lift concentrates on jowls, loose skin on the neck, and fat under the chin. The incision is made around the ear lobe and behind the ear to the lower scalp.
In all three methods, incisions are closed with stitches or tissue glue. Scars are artfully placed to be hidden in the hairline as well as the natural contours of the face.
Who is a good candidate for a facelift?
A facelift can achieve desired results by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and also reviving the skin of the face and neck. Men may consider facelift surgery to boost their confidence and self-esteem. Men who choose to have a facelift are more likely to succeed further in the workforce, regain their youthful appearance or might desire to match the same youthful appearance as their significant other.
Facelifts for men are most effective for patients who want to correct:
- Midface sagging
- Deep creases under the eyes
- Deep creases between the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds)
- Jowls due to loss of muscle tone
- Sagging areas of fat
- Loose skin and fat under the chin and jaw
Facelift surgeries can be done in combination with brow lift or eye lift surgeries. This is especially true for those looking to eliminate signs of aging in the brow, eyelids or midface. Facial injections or fillers are another great way to enhance the results of a facelift and further eliminate wrinkles and other signs of aging. Dr. Steinbrech provides a variety of options for his male patients to best customize the results they are looking for. A facelift is best for men who are generally healthy. It is also ideal that the patient not smoke.
What Can I Expect During My Facelift Recovery?
Following a Rhytidectomy, Dr. Steinbrech bandages the incisions and may place drainage tubes in the area. The tubes will be taken out the following day which will allow for your hair to be washed. Surgical clips may also be used if necessary and these will be removed with the stitches one week after the procedure.
At first, you may experience bruising, swelling, numbness, and a feeling of tightness or tension in the face and neck area. Your face may look uneven or distorted, and your facial muscles may feel stiff; all usually resolve within 3-6 weeks. Sensations typically return to normal within a few months and scars become less noticeable in time. Patients can return to work as soon as three weeks following surgery. It is important for patients to be gentle with their skin and hair in the recovery process. Areas of beard-growing skin may have been moved in the procedure and require men to shave behind the neck and ears.
